Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation’s Science Without Borders® Challenge 2026: Inspiring Youth to Protect Our Oceans Through Art

Admin, October 24, 2025October 24, 2025

Application Deadline: March 2, 2026

The Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation has officially announced the 2026 edition of its renowned Science Without Borders® Challenge, an international art competition dedicated to promoting ocean conservation through creative expression. The annual challenge invites young artists from around the globe to use their talent and imagination to raise awareness about marine protection while showcasing the critical role of ocean ecosystems in sustaining life on Earth.

About the Science Without Borders® Challenge

The Science Without Borders® Challenge is an educational art competition that encourages students and teachers to engage in conversations about the importance of ocean conservation. Founded by the Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation, the contest combines creativity and science to inspire a new generation of ocean advocates. Through artwork, participants express their understanding of marine environments and the urgent need to preserve aquatic resources for a sustainable future.

Each year, the Challenge highlights a unique theme that helps young artists explore a specific aspect of marine science. For 2026, the theme is “Microscopic Marine Life.”

2026 Theme: Microscopic Marine Life

Microscopic marine organisms, though invisible to the naked eye, are some of the most vital creatures on our planet. They form the base of the ocean food chain, drive nutrient cycles, and produce much of the Earth’s oxygen. These microorganisms also play a significant role in regulating global climate systems.

By participating in this year’s challenge, students have the opportunity to celebrate the unseen wonders of the ocean and showcase how these tiny yet powerful organisms contribute to the health and balance of marine ecosystems.

Who Can Participate

The Science Without Borders® Challenge 2026 is open to students aged 11 to 19 years from around the world. To qualify, participants must be enrolled in a primary or secondary school or a homeschool equivalent. College and university students are not eligible to apply.

Entries will be judged in two age-based categories:

  • Ages 11–14
  • Ages 15–19

The judging criteria include artistic quality, creativity, originality, and how well the artwork reflects this year’s theme, Microscopic Marine Life.

Prizes and Awards

The winners of the 2026 Science Without Borders® Challenge will receive scholarship prizes to support their educational journey and artistic development.

  • 1st Place: $500
  • 2nd Place: $350
  • 3rd Place: $200

These awards not only recognize artistic excellence but also encourage young people to continue exploring environmental issues and promoting sustainable ocean practices.

How to Participate

Students interested in joining the competition can submit their original artwork inspired by microscopic marine organisms. Each piece should creatively illustrate the theme and demonstrate a strong connection between art and marine science.

Entries must be submitted before the March 2, 2026 deadline. Detailed submission guidelines, eligibility criteria, and judging information are available on the official Science Without Borders® Challenge webpage.

Empowering Youth Through Art and Science

The Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation continues to be a global leader in ocean education and conservation. Through the Science Without Borders® Challenge, the Foundation empowers students to express their environmental consciousness and contribute meaningfully to the global movement for ocean sustainability.

By merging art and science, the competition nurtures creativity, critical thinking, and environmental stewardship—skills that are essential for the next generation of ocean protectors.

Why This Challenge Matters

At a time when ocean ecosystems face growing threats from pollution, climate change, and overfishing, initiatives like the Science Without Borders® Challenge provide a platform for young people to take action through creativity. Each submission serves as a reminder that even the smallest voices—and organisms—can make a profound impact on the planet.
