Apply Now: The African Epidemic Service Program 2025 (AES)

Admin, February 20, 2025February 20, 2025

Application Deadline: March 31, 2025

In today’s interconnected world, rapid disease outbreaks present significant challenges to public health systems. Africa, with its diverse populations and healthcare landscapes, faces unique hurdles in combating epidemics. To address these challenges, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has introduced the African Epidemic Service (AES), a specialized training initiative aimed at enhancing public health expertise across the continent.

Africa CDC: A Pillar of Public Health in Africa

Africa CDC, an autonomous technical agency of the African Union (AU), is dedicated to improving the continent’s ability to prevent, detect, and respond to disease threats. Rooted in scientific research, policy, and data-driven strategies, the organization supports AU member states in strengthening their public health capacities.

Recognizing the urgent need for skilled public health professionals, Africa CDC established a Workforce Development Task Force in 2018. This initiative led to a comprehensive Framework for Workforce Development, which focuses on three core public health disciplines: Field Epidemiology, Laboratory Leadership, and Public Health Informatics.

The African Epidemic Service (AES) Program

The AES is a prestigious, two-year competency-based program designed to bolster the capacity of African Union member states in disease prevention and response. The program comprises three specialized tracks:

1. Epidemiology Track

This track equips public health professionals with essential skills in disease surveillance and outbreak response. Fellows gain hands-on experience through a blend of classroom instruction and fieldwork, empowering them to tackle pressing health challenges effectively. The first cohort of 10 Fellows has already been deployed across Africa, and applications are now open for the second cohort.

2. Laboratory Leadership Track

A strong laboratory system is critical for disease detection and response. This track enhances the technical and managerial competencies of laboratory professionals, ensuring they can oversee complex operations, implement quality control measures, and contribute to robust disease surveillance systems.

3. Public Health Informatics Track

As digital health solutions become increasingly essential, this track focuses on integrating data analytics and technology into public health systems. Fellows are trained in data management, surveillance tools, and digital strategies to enhance Africa’s ability to monitor and control disease outbreaks.

Who Can Apply?

The AES is open to public health professionals from all AU member states. Eligible applicants include those with backgrounds in medicine, veterinary medicine, nursing, environmental health, occupational health, and other relevant fields. Candidates should demonstrate a keen interest in epidemiology and a commitment to addressing Africa’s health challenges.

Why the AES Program Matters

Africa faces evolving health threats, from infectious diseases like malaria and tuberculosis to emerging zoonotic illnesses. Coupled with climate change, urbanization, and global travel, the need for a skilled public health workforce has never been greater. The AES is a transformative initiative that builds technical expertise, strengthens health systems, and prepares future leaders in disease response and prevention.

By fostering a new generation of public health professionals, the AES ensures that Africa’s epidemic responses are evidence-based, data-driven, and locally relevant. This initiative is a game-changer in the fight against epidemics, empowering skilled professionals to drive sustainable health solutions across the continent.

How to Apply
