Applications are now open for the LAEL Fellowship Program for Environmental Leadership in Africa, a six-month volunteer fellowship designed to equip emerging African leaders with practical skills, professional experience, and leadership capacity in environmental work.

Organised by Leafgreen Africa, the fellowship brings together participants from different professional and academic backgrounds to learn about climate change, sustainability, biodiversity, nature-based solutions, research, data, and environmental leadership.

For Africans interested in climate action, sustainability, environmental research, programme management, GIS, communications, or impact measurement, the fellowship provides an opportunity to develop practical capabilities while contributing to real environmental projects.

About the LAEL Fellowship Program

The LAEL Fellowship—short for Leafgreen Africa Environmental Leadership—combines structured learning with practical experience. Rather than focusing only on environmental theory, the six-month programme takes fellows through learning, application, collaboration, measurement, communication, and leadership.

The programme begins with foundational environmental topics before participants move into one of seven specialist tracks:

• Programme Management
• Research Lead
• Research Associate
• GIS Analyst
• Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning/MRV
• Social Media & Communications
• Graphic Design

The curriculum also covers research and data literacy, evidence-based communication, stakeholder management, grant development, environmental finance, and applied environmental projects. Fellows are expected to work collaboratively and complete a final capstone project.

Leafgreen Africa’s broader work combines environmental conservation, climate education, community engagement, and GIS-supported environmental monitoring, making the fellowship particularly relevant for people interested in applying technical and professional skills to environmental challenges in Africa.

How to Strengthen Your Application

Before applying, think beyond simply expressing an interest in environmental issues. A stronger application should demonstrate what you can contribute and what you hope to develop.

Choose the specialist track that best connects with your existing skills and career direction. For example, someone with programme coordination experience may find Programme Management relevant, while a data professional could explore GIS or MRV.

Also, provide specific examples. Instead of simply saying you are passionate about sustainability, explain a project, volunteer activity, research assignment, community initiative, or professional experience that demonstrates your interest.

Finally, be realistic about the commitment. Fellows are expected to dedicate 6–8 hours weekly, maintain at least 80% attendance, complete assignments, participate in collaborative projects, and deliver a capstone.
