In a rapidly evolving world, Africa’s future hinges on visionary leaders equipped to tackle its unique challenges. The IGAD Leadership Academy (ILA) is now accepting applications for its 2025 Leadership Development Training, offering young leaders from the IGAD region a transformative opportunity to hone their skills, drive governance reform, and foster regional collaboration. With three cohorts slated for 2025, this fully funded program blends African leadership philosophies with global best practices—empowering participants to become catalysts for sustainable change.

What is the IGAD Leadership Academy?


Established by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the ILA is a premier institution dedicated to nurturing ethical, gender-responsive leaders across East Africa and the Horn. Endorsed by IGAD’s Heads of State in 2022 and hosted at Kenya’s Mombasa School of Government, the Academy prioritizes homegrown solutions to regional challenges through mentorship, peer learning, and cutting-edge training.

About the 2025 Leadership Development Program
Supported by the Government of Japan, the 2025 training spans three intensive cohorts designed for young professionals aged 18–35 from Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Uganda. The curriculum merges African leadership wisdom with global insights, focusing on:

  • Good Governance & Policy Design
  • Conflict Resolution & Peacebuilding
  • Technology & Innovation in Leadership
  • Gender Equity & Inclusive Decision-Making

Eligibility Criteria


To qualify, applicants must:

  • Be aged 18–35 and hold a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience in governance/leadership).
  • Demonstrate leadership experience and a commitment to community impact.
  • Show proficiency in English (training medium).
  • Be available to travel to Kenya for the program.

How to Apply


Deadline: April 5, 2025
Steps:

  1. Prepare a CV (3 pages max) and motivation letter addressing:
  • Your leadership vision and alignment with ILA’s goals.
  • Past impact in your community/country.
  • A regional challenge you aim to address post-training.
  1. Secure two recommendation letters (academic/professional).
  2. Email materials to ILA@igad.int with the subject line: “ILA 2025 TRAINING”.
