Applications are now open for the 2026/2027 Obama Foundation Leaders Africa Program, a transformative six-month virtual leadership initiative designed to inspire, empower, and connect the next generation of African changemakers.

Launched in 2018, the Obama Foundation Leaders Program builds a global network of leaders committed to creating inclusive, values-based change across their communities and regions. The program focuses on nurturing individuals aged 24–45 who are actively shaping more equitable societies where everyone can belong, participate, and thrive.

Following successful expansions to Asia-Pacific (2019), Europe (2020), and the United States (2023), the Africa cohort continues to be at the heart of the Foundation’s mission to cultivate ethical, impactful leadership.

A Transformative Leadership Experience

Inspired by the leadership philosophy of President Barack Obama, the program immerses participants in collaborative learning, skill-building, and real-world problem-solving. Through group sessions, small-team discussions, and personalized coaching, participants strengthen their leadership capacities and develop strategies for systemic, long-term change.

By the end of the program, participants will have:

  • Built a strong foundation in values-based leadership
  • Expanded their networks with like-minded changemakers
  • Gained practical skills for driving inclusive, lasting impact
  • Joined the Obama Leadership Network, a vibrant community of over 1,500 active alumni from around the world who continue to collaborate for global good

About the Leaders Africa Program

The Leaders Africa Program is a six-month, fully virtual experience focused on leadership development, community building, and collaborative learning. The initiative identifies and supports exceptional individuals from the public sector, civil society, and private enterprise who demonstrate commitment to advancing positive change on the continent.

Participants are selected for their impact-driven work, ethical leadership, and vision for strengthening their local and regional communities. The program is designed to equip them with practical tools, mentorship, and networks that enable them to amplify their influence and drive sustainable transformation across Africa.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the 2026/2027 cohort, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Residency: Must currently live in any African country or territory.
  • Citizenship: Must be a citizen, permanent resident, or have lived in Africa for at least five consecutive years.
  • Geographic Focus: Work must contribute to positive change within local African communities or across the continent.
  • Age Range: Between 24 and 45 years old as of September 1, 2026.
  • Language: Must be professionally proficient in English.
  • Experience: At least three years of relevant leadership or professional experience in a chosen issue area.
  • Commitment: Willingness to fully engage from September 1, 2026, to May 1, 2027, with scheduled breaks.
  • Ethics: Participants must abstain from running in any political campaigns during the program period.
  • Compliance: Must not have any legal restrictions preventing participation in a U.S.-based or virtual program.

Core Elements of the Program

The program includes a rich blend of virtual and interactive learning experiences designed to strengthen participants’ leadership journeys:

  • Weekly Virtual Video Calls: Engaging live sessions four times a month that feature global experts, leadership frameworks, and collaborative discussions.
  • Monthly Community Groups: Peer learning circles that foster deeper connections, reflection on leadership case studies, and collaborative problem-solving.
  • Individualized Leadership Coaching: One-on-one guidance from experienced coaches to enhance self-awareness, goal-setting, and leadership growth.

These sessions are structured to promote sustained leadership development and collective empowerment among participants who share a common goal—building a better future for Africa.

Program Timeline and Application Details

The Leaders Africa Program 2026/2027 runs from September 2026 to May 2027, featuring a blend of virtual sessions, mentorship, and peer collaboration.

Application Deadline: December 12, 2025, at 12 p.m. (local time)
Selection Announcements: June 2026
