Apply for the Chizi Wigwe Prize for African Futurism

The 1952 Africa Foundation, in partnership with the HOW Foundation, proudly introduces the inaugural Chizi Wigwe Prize for African Futurism. This distinguished award is designed to empower African artists and creatives to envision and depict a promising future for the continent through innovative artistic expressions. It underscores the Foundation’s dedication to cultivating a vibrant and inclusive creative environment, enabling African artists to flourish and contribute meaningfully to global dialogues.​

Theme: Africa in 2100

The central theme for this year’s prize is “Africa in 2100.” African Futurism, which seamlessly blends cultural heritage, technology, and imagination, serves as the foundation for this theme. Artists are encouraged to explore and portray visions of African societies in the year 2100, contemplating how technological advancements might influence cultural traditions, art, and innovation. Additionally, participants should consider Africa’s potential role in addressing global challenges and advancing humanity.​

Prize Details

The Chizi Wigwe Prize offers a substantial award of $15,000 to an exceptional artist whose work embodies the essence of African Futurism and aligns with the “Africa in 2100” theme. This financial support aims to assist the recipient in advancing their artistic pursuits and amplifying their influence within the creative community.​

Eligibility Criteria

  • Open to artists and creatives across Africa, aged 18-45.
  • Applicants must submit an original entry aligned with the theme “Africa in 2100.”
  • All artistic disciplines and mediums are welcome.

Submission Requirements

Interested artists are required to provide the following materials:​

  • Project Proposal: A detailed outline of the proposed artistic project, demonstrating its relevance to African Futurism and the “Africa in 2100” theme.​
  • Portfolio: A curated selection of the artist’s previous work showcasing their artistic vision and skill.​
  • Curriculum Vitae/Resume: A comprehensive overview of the artist’s experience and accomplishments.​
  • Reference Letter: A letter of recommendation from an art director or senior management of an art or cultural institution, attesting to the artist’s artistic merit and potential.​
  • Statement of Purpose: A concise statement (no more than one page) articulating the artist’s artistic goals and how the Chizi Wigwe Prize will contribute to their realization.​

All submissions must be completed through the official application form available on the 1952 Africa Foundation’s website.​

Application Deadline
