Applications are Now Open for the African Development Bank Young Professionals Program (YPP) 2025 for Young Africans

Admin, November 1, 2025November 1, 2025

Application Deadline: November 30, 2025

The African Development Bank (AfDB) is now accepting applications for the 2025 Young Professionals Program (YPP)—a prestigious and competitive initiative designed to build the next generation of African leaders and development specialists. This three-year international program offers high-achieving young professionals the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to Africa’s growth while developing their leadership potential within one of the continent’s most impactful institutions.

About the African Development Bank Young Professionals Program

The AfDB Young Professionals Program (YPP) is a flagship talent development initiative focused on cultivating future leaders who will advance Africa’s social and economic transformation. Through the YPP, the Bank nurtures diverse, passionate, and skilled professionals committed to sustainable development and innovation across Africa.

The program aims to:

  • Foster diversity and inclusion within the Bank’s workforce.
  • Develop a pipeline of future development professionals and leaders.
  • Strengthen the Bank’s capacity to deliver transformative projects and policies across Africa.

Participants, known as Young Professionals (YPs), gain hands-on experience working on high-impact projects while receiving world-class professional development, mentorship, and exposure to multiple departments within the Bank.

Program Structure

The AfDB YPP is a three-year rotational program that allows participants to experience different facets of the Bank’s operations, including policy development, finance, project management, and capacity building.

Rotations

Young Professionals rotate through three different Bank complexes over the first two years:

  • Rotation 1: Apply academic knowledge and gain practical experience (Year 1)
  • Rotation 2: Expand skills through challenging assignments (Year 2)
  • Rotation 3: Transition into a department where they will graduate (final 9 months)

This rotational structure helps participants build a holistic understanding of the Bank’s functions and prepares them for leadership roles within the organization.

Capacity Development

The program includes an intensive Learning Faculty featuring specialized courses, postgraduate programs with partner universities, the AfDB Operations Academy, and international certification opportunities. These components are designed to deepen technical expertise, strengthen leadership skills, and enhance professional growth.

Mentorship and Coaching

Each participant receives tailored mentorship and coaching from experienced Bank professionals. The mentorship component helps YPs integrate quickly into the AfDB culture, build networks, and navigate their career paths effectively.

Graduation and Integration

Upon successful completion of the program—including the mandatory rotations, mentorship requirements, and performance benchmarks—participants are integrated into the Bank’s workforce at the PL5 grade level.

Eligibility Requirements

To be considered for the 2025 AfDB Young Professionals Program, applicants must:

  • Be a citizen of an AfDB member country.
  • Be 32 years old or younger by November 30, 2025.
  • Hold a Master’s degree in a discipline relevant to the Bank’s work (e.g., economics, finance, engineering, development studies, or related fields).
  • Have at least three years of professional experience related to the Bank’s Ten-Year Strategy and development priorities.
  • Demonstrate a strong passion for Africa’s development and proven experience working on the continent or in other developing regions.
  • Exhibit high adaptability, teamwork, leadership, and communication skills.
  • Be fluent in English or French, with a working knowledge of the other language preferred.
  • Be willing to work at the Bank’s Headquarters in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, and travel across the continent as needed.
