The program provides up to eight (post-)doctoral stipends for a research stay of up to three months on campus, with the possibility of an extension to four months upon request. Each fellowship also includes a digital affiliation lasting 12 months, allowing participants to maintain professional collaboration and research engagement after the on-site phase. The digital affiliation begins on August 1, 2026, while the preferred start date for the on-campus research period is October 1, 2026. About the Zukunftskolleg Konnect Fellowships The Zukunftskolleg Konnect Fellowships aim to strengthen academic collaboration and knowledge exchange between the Global South and European institutions. They are designed for outstanding early-career researchers conducting innovative studies that align with one of the 13 academic departments at the University of Konstanz. The program provides a platform for fellows to expand their professional networks, experience the German research landscape, and build connections that foster future academic partnerships. Doctoral students in their final year are also encouraged to apply, as the fellowship serves as an ideal stepping stone into the German and European academic systems. Eligibility Requirements To qualify for the Zukunftskolleg Konnect Fellowship, applicants must meet the following criteria: Be born and currently working in a country in Latin America, Asia, or Africa. Hold a doctorate (obtained after February 15, 2024) or be a doctoral student in the final year of study. Have completed or be completing a doctoral degree at a university in Latin America, Asia, or Africa. Must not hold a permanent professorship or equivalent qualification. Submit a research proposal that aligns with one of the disciplines represented at the University of Konstanz. Applicants may choose between two tracks: Track A: Collaborate with a researcher at the University of Konstanz (no prior contact required). Track N: Be nominated by a (Junior) Professor at the University of Konstanz. Preference is given to candidates from underrepresented countries and those seeking collaboration within the Zukunftskolleg, the Cluster of Excellence “Politics of Inequality”, or the “Centre for the Advanced Study of Collective Behaviour.” Fellowship Benefits Successful applicants receive a range of financial and academic benefits, including: A monthly stipend of €1,300 for doctoral students and €2,000 for postdoctoral researchers. Travel support covering a standard economy-class return ticket to Konstanz. Access to the University of Konstanz’s facilities, including library and IT services. Up to €750 research allowance (upon request). A Research Return Visit, allowing a Konstanz researcher to visit the fellow’s home institution. Participation in Zukunftskolleg events and academic workshops. A digital affiliation grant of up to €900 for online engagement after the on-site phase. Optional German language courses (online and on-site, subject to confirmation). Access to the Career Kit Plus series — workshops on academic writing, open access publishing, funding opportunities, and career development. Required documents include: A letter of motivation (max. 2 pages) describing research goals and relevance to the University of Konstanz. A summary of the ongoing research project (max. 3 pages, including references). A detailed work and time plan for the on-campus research stay (max. 2 pages). A curriculum vitae (CV) and relevant certificates (doctoral degree or supervisor’s confirmation). For Track A: one academic reference letter (signed and on letterhead). For Track N: a nomination letter from a University of Konstanz (Junior) Professor, sent directly to the Zukunftskolleg. Only complete applications submitted through the portal will be reviewed.
