WASH Social Impact Incentives for African Enterprises in Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene: Apply Now

Admin, September 13, 2025September 13, 2025

Application Deadline: November 2, 2025

The Impact-Linked Fund for WASH (ILF for WASH), supported by Roots of Impact, has opened a new funding window for African enterprises through the Social Impact Incentives (SIINC) model. This innovative financing mechanism rewards businesses for achieving independently verified social impact, enabling them to scale faster while making a deeper difference in underserved communities.

The SIINC approach has already demonstrated success in driving sustainable growth across impact sectors, and its application in the water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) space is set to accelerate transformative solutions in Africa. With flexible, time-bound payments linked directly to impact outcomes, enterprises can attract investors, strengthen operations, and enhance their ability to serve low-income households.

Why This Opportunity Matters

Access to safe water, improved sanitation, and proper hygiene remains a pressing challenge across Africa. Millions still lack access to clean drinking water, adequate sanitation facilities, and menstrual hygiene support. Enterprises tackling these challenges often face funding gaps that limit their ability to scale.

The WASH Social Impact Incentives program provides a unique opportunity for social enterprises to bridge this gap. By combining outcome-based payments with investment readiness, the program empowers businesses to deliver sustainable services, improve gender equality, and contribute to climate resilience.

Eligibility Criteria

Enterprises seeking to benefit from this opportunity must meet the following requirements:

  • Be based and/or actively operating in Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, or the MENA region.
  • Have been operational for at least three years with a clear business track record.
  • Be in the process of raising investment(s) or demonstrate concrete prospects of doing so, with minimum thresholds of:
    • EUR 500,000 for drinking water and menstrual hygiene enterprises.
    • EUR 250,000 for sanitation-focused enterprises.
  • Have a solid business and revenue model, irrespective of legal form.
  • Demonstrate near-term financial sustainability, with clear break-even and profitability projections.
  • Focus directly on water, sanitation, and/or hygiene (WASH), prioritizing impact on low-income communities, gender inclusion, and climate resilience.
  • Have an impact measurement and management system already in place.

Deadline and Application

The application deadline is 2 November 2025. Enterprises that align with the eligibility criteria are encouraged to apply for this transformative opportunity.

Driving Scalable Impact in Africa

Through SIINC, WASH enterprises can unlock blended financing models that go beyond grants or loans. This outcome-based incentive mechanism builds trust with investors, boosts credibility, and creates measurable improvements in the lives of vulnerable populations.

African enterprises with scalable WASH solutions stand to benefit from this program not only through direct financial incentives but also by positioning themselves as leaders in sustainable development. By focusing on gender, climate, and community-driven outcomes, applicants can contribute to long-term resilience and inclusive growth across the continent.

This call for applications is a timely opportunity for mission-driven businesses ready to expand their footprint and accelerate the transformation of WASH services in Africa and beyond.
