MIT Climate & Energy Prize 2026: Empowering Student Innovators to Drive the Net-Zero Future

Admin, November 25, 2025November 25, 2025

Application Deadline: January 11, 2026

The global climate crisis demands bold ideas and transformative innovation. For nearly two decades, the MIT Climate & Energy Prize (MIT CEP) has been at the forefront of driving this transformation—empowering university students to develop groundbreaking solutions that push the world closer to achieving net-zero carbon emissions.

Founded in 2007, the MIT Climate & Energy Prize is the largest and longest-running competition for student-led climate and energy startups in the world. The program fuels creativity, entrepreneurship, and collaboration among young innovators determined to address one of the most urgent challenges of our time—climate change.

A Global Platform for Student Entrepreneurs

The MIT Climate & Energy Prize provides a unique platform for student entrepreneurs from across the globe to bring their climate-focused startup ideas to life. Through this prestigious competition, participants gain access to:

  • Over $100,000 in non-dilutive cash prizes to accelerate their ventures.
  • World-class mentorship from industry experts, investors, and academics.
  • Exposure to a global innovation network focused on sustainability and clean energy.

Since its inception, the competition has received over 1,000 applications, supported more than 315 teams, and awarded over $3.4 million in prize money. Alumni startups have gone on to raise more than $4.6 billion in follow-on investment, proving the long-term impact of the initiative.

Transforming Climate Innovation Worldwide

The legacy of the MIT Climate & Energy Prize is visible in the success stories of its alumni. Startups such as Nitricity, Takachar, Aeroshield Material, and Ubiquitous Energy have become global leaders in clean technology and sustainable energy solutions. Collectively, over 220 alumni teams have successfully launched and raised more than $1.7 billion in follow-on funding.

These ventures are tackling key issues—from renewable energy storage and carbon capture to sustainable agriculture and green infrastructure—each contributing to a more resilient and sustainable planet.
