Internships and Legal Traineeships at GIZ: Apply Now

Admin, September 8, 2025September 8, 2025

Application Deadline: Unspecified

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is one of the world’s leading organizations for international cooperation, working in over 120 countries to promote sustainable development and global partnerships. For students and young professionals, GIZ offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience through internships and legal traineeships both in Germany and abroad. These programs provide valuable professional exposure, intercultural learning, and a pathway toward a meaningful international career.

Why Choose an Internship at GIZ?

An internship with GIZ allows you to gain practical insights into the complex world of international cooperation for sustainable development. Interns are integrated into diverse teams and actively contribute to real projects in areas such as governance, climate change, digital transformation, gender equality, migration, agriculture, and economic development.

Placements are available across GIZ’s main offices in Berlin, Bonn, and Eschborn, as well as at numerous regional offices worldwide. By joining, interns not only expand their professional skills but also become part of a global network of experts working toward solutions for a future worth living.

Eligibility and Requirements

To apply for an internship, you must be enrolled at a recognized university or have graduated no more than six months before the start of your placement. GIZ welcomes students from a wide range of disciplines including:

  • Business administration and economics
  • Political science and law
  • International relations and regional studies
  • Communication, social sciences, and environmental studies
  • Computer science, geography, agriculture, and forestry
  • Vocational education and international project management

Applicants should demonstrate strong teamwork and communication skills, intercultural competence, and resilience. A solid command of a universal language and proficiency in MS Office are also required.

Application Process

GIZ accepts applications for internships throughout the year, but only for advertised positions. Interested candidates must apply online via the GIZ Job Portal, where vacancies are published regularly. Each listing contains an Apply Now button that leads to the official application form.

When applying, it is important to submit a concise yet well-written cover letter that clearly highlights your motivation and relevant skills. Applications without a strong cover letter are often less competitive.

Duration and Benefits

Internships typically last up to six months. Candidates may complete one internship in Germany and another abroad, depending on their academic and career interests. In certain cases, shorter internships may be offered, which will be clearly stated in the job posting.

For internships in Germany, statutory health insurance is required unless the placement is a mandatory part of vocational training. For internships abroad, insurance and other arrangements are determined individually with the Human Resources team.

In addition to gaining practical experience, interns may also complete their final dissertation at GIZ. Applicants who wish to do this should state it clearly in their application so their academic project can be factored into placement decisions.

Legal Traineeships at GIZ

For law students, GIZ also offers legal traineeships in Germany and worldwide. These placements provide in-depth exposure to the legal aspects of international cooperation.

  • In Germany: Trainees work within the Legal Affairs and Insurance Unit in Bonn or Eschborn. They support experienced legal professionals in handling complex cases, attend internal and external meetings, and independently manage assigned tasks. This placement provides insight into the interdisciplinary legal issues that arise in international cooperation.
  • Worldwide: Trainees placed at international GIZ offices engage directly with on-site legal projects. They take on responsibilities under supervision, gaining first-hand experience in how legal frameworks shape development projects in partner countries.

Applications for legal traineeships can be submitted at any time via email or through the GIZ Job Portal.

A Gateway to International Careers

Whether you are completing an academic internship or a legal traineeship, joining GIZ offers far more than work experience. Interns and trainees become part of a mission-driven organization shaping sustainable solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges. From climate resilience to education reform and governance, GIZ’s work creates opportunities to make a tangible impact while building a solid foundation for your professional future.
