INSPIRE Research Challenge 2026-27: Up to £75,000 for Cancer Researchers Admin, October 15, 2026October 15, 2026 Application Deadline: November 13, 2026. Applications are now open for the INSPIRE Research Challenge, a global grant program from World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) International. It funds early career researchers working on cancer prevention, treatment and survivorship. The application deadline is November 13, 2026. Funding of up to £75,000 (about $95,250 USD) is available for projects of up to 12 months. The program is open to researchers in every country, so scientists across Africa can apply. For African researchers who have recently built their independence, this is a rare chance to lead a funded project. It also gives you a track record you can use to win larger grants later. About the INSPIRE Research Challenge WCRF International created INSPIRE with leading cancer research organisations to support the next generation of scientific leaders. The program responds to evidence gaps found through the Global Cancer Update Programme and consultation with scientific stakeholders. Priority Areas for 2026-27 Your project must address at least one of six priority areas: Integrative oncology, including diet, physical activity, body composition, sleep and supportive care Lifestyle and weight-loss medications Early-onset cancers Early-life exposures Ingested contaminants in food and water Ultra-processed foods Projects may cover more than one area where the science supports it. They should be directly relevant to cancer prevention, treatment or survivorship, and can address any stage of the cancer journey. The focus is on modifiable factors such as diet, nutrition, physical activity, sleep, psychological stress, immune function, contaminants and pathogens. Benefits of the Grant Up to £75,000: Funding of about $95,250 USD for up to 12 months. Flexible spending: Cover salaries, supplies, essential equipment, Open Access fees, travel, services and Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) costs. Research independence: Lead your own project as an early career researcher. Global access: The program is open to researchers worldwide. Career momentum: A funded, independent project strengthens future applications. Note that overhead costs are not covered. Eligibility Requirements You can apply if you: Are an early career researcher who earned a PhD or equivalent higher research degree 2 to 7 years ago (full-time equivalent, allowing for career breaks) Are employed on a research contract at a university, medical school, hospital or research institute Can show conceptual independence from your supervisor(s) Can provide a letter of support confirming your ability to conduct independent research Other rules apply: Each Lead Applicant may submit only one application per cycle. Each institution may submit a maximum of three applications per cycle. Current WCRF Network grant holders are not eligible. Application Process and Key Dates Every cost you request must be itemised and justified. If you request salary, state the percentage of your time you will spend on the project. Key dates: October 7, 2026: Call posted November 13, 2026: Application deadline The call does not list the full application documents, so check the official page for the complete requirements. Why You Should Apply: Tips for a Strong Application Pick one clear priority area. Show exactly how your question fits. Focus on modifiable factors. Link your design to diet, activity, sleep or exposure. Prove your independence. Explain what is new in your work compared with your supervisor’s. Get your support letter early. It must confirm you can conduct independent research. Justify every cost. Itemise your budget and tie each line to a research task. Plan within 12 months. Set realistic milestones for a one-year project. Include public involvement. PPIE costs are eligible, so consider how patients or communities will shape your work. Check institutional limits. Tell your research office now, because each institution can submit only three applications. Conclusion The INSPIRE Research Challenge offers funding, independence and visibility to early career cancer researchers. If your PhD falls within the 2 to 7 year window and your idea fits a priority area, this grant is worth a serious application.
