Griots Fellowship 2026 for African Storytellers: Apply to Shape the Continent’s Narrative

Admin, April 26, 2026April 26, 2026

Application Deadline: April 30, 2026

Applications are now open for the Griots Fellowship 2026, a unique leadership and storytelling program designed for African creatives and changemakers ready to influence how the continent is seen and understood.

Across Africa, storytelling has always been more than entertainment—it is history, identity, and power. From oral traditions to modern digital media, the stories told about Africa shape perceptions, policies, and possibilities. Yet, many African narratives are still underrepresented or misrepresented globally. This is where initiatives like the Griots Fellowship step in.

Offered by the LéO Africa Institute in partnership with KAS Uganda, this fellowship is not just about telling stories—it’s about reclaiming narratives, amplifying authentic voices, and shaping Africa’s future through powerful storytelling.

If you are a writer, filmmaker, artist, or creative working to tell meaningful stories rooted in African realities, this could be a defining opportunity for your growth and visibility.

About the Griots Fellowship 2026

The Griots Fellowship is a leadership and storytelling development program inspired by the West African Griot tradition—where storytellers serve as custodians of history, culture, and community voice.

Now in its second cohort, the program brings together emerging African leaders and creatives who are passionate about using storytelling as a tool for social change, cultural preservation, and innovation.

The 2026 theme, “Stories that will Define Our Future,” challenges participants to explore narratives that will shape Africa’s next chapter—stories of resilience, identity, transformation, innovation, and leadership.

The fellowship blends storytelling with leadership development, equipping participants not just to tell stories, but to lead conversations and influence perspectives.

What Makes This Fellowship Unique?

Unlike many traditional fellowships, the Griots Fellowship focuses on both craft and impact. It helps participants refine their storytelling while also building their confidence, visibility, and leadership presence.

Participants will go through four key stages:

  • Narrative Strategy & Craft
Learn how to structure compelling stories, clarify your message, and deepen the purpose behind your work.
  • Media Production Ethics
Understand responsibility in storytelling—how to represent people, cultures, and issues with integrity.
  • Platform Building
Discover how to grow your audience, build influence, and position your work for greater reach.
  • The LéO Africa Talk
Deliver a powerful TED-style talk to a live audience—an opportunity to showcase your story and voice on a major platform.
