About the Sustainable African Futures Programme Africa faces a dual challenge—achieving inclusive social development while addressing environmental sustainability. The Sustainable African Futures programme recognizes that lasting change requires pathways that are both socially just and environmentally responsible. This innovative research-based Master’s programme empowers African researchers to generate knowledge, influence policy, and contribute to global sustainability dialogues from an African-centered perspective. The approach emphasizes local knowledge systems, community participation, and African research leadership, ensuring that sustainability strategies align with the realities and resilience of African societies. Through its curriculum and mentorship, the programme equips participants with research tools to tackle complex sustainability issues across agriculture, energy, governance, infrastructure, and environmental management. Programme Structure and Delivery The Masters by Research in Sustainable African Futures is administered by the University of Edinburgh and delivered primarily online, offering flexibility and access to participants across Africa. Mode of Study: Full-time (12 months)Programme Duration: September 2026 – August 2027 Participants will engage in: Three core courses: Data Collection, Research Design, and Dynamics of African Development Two in-person Sustainability Schools hosted at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg Independent Research Dissertation (18,000 words) focusing on African sustainability challenges Additionally, two online micro-methods courses complement the learning experience, offering practical tools for applied research. The degree is equivalent in academic standing to on-campus programmes at the University of Edinburgh. Eligibility Criteria To qualify, applicants must: Hold a UK 2:1 Honours degree or equivalent international qualification. Be a citizen, resident, or refugee in an African country. Be 35 years or younger by the programme start date (born on or after 1 January 1991). Demonstrate proficiency in English (IELTS or equivalent). Be affiliated with one of the partner universities, which include the University of Ibadan, Makerere University, University of Ghana, University of Rwanda, University of Malawi, and others. Preference is given to women, refugees, persons with disabilities, and applicants without a prior Master’s degree.
