Entries Open for the Wege Prize 2025: $65,000 in Global Student Innovation Awards

Admin, August 18, 2025August 18, 2025

Application Deadline: October 5, 2025

The Wege Prize 2025 is officially open for entries, inviting visionary student teams from around the world to design bold, sustainable solutions for a better future. This annual international competition challenges young innovators to reimagine how economies can shift from a linear “take-make-waste” model to a circular system that eliminates waste, regenerates natural resources, and creates long-term resilience.

With mentorship, global recognition, and a total prize pool of $65,000 USD, the Wege Prize empowers university and college students to transform big ideas into actionable solutions with real-world impact.

About the Wege Prize

The Wege Prize is more than just an innovation challenge—it is a platform that brings together students across disciplines, cultures, and institutions to tackle wicked problems. These are highly complex global issues such as waste mismanagement, environmental degradation, and resource scarcity that cannot be solved by simple fixes.

By applying the principles of the circular economy, student teams collaboratively design solutions—whether in the form of products, services, systems, or businesses—that can reshape industries, protect the planet, and benefit society at large.

The Focus: Circular Economy Innovation

At the core of the competition is the question of how humanity can successfully transition to a circular economy. To achieve this, student teams must create solutions guided by three foundational principles:

  1. Eliminate Waste and Pollution – Redesign processes to prevent waste and pollution at the source.
  2. Circulate Products and Materials – Extend product lifecycles through reuse, repair, recycling, and remanufacturing.
  3. Regenerate Natural Systems – Develop closed-loop solutions that restore ecosystems, improve nutrient cycles, and enhance biodiversity.

These principles push participants to design innovations that are not just clever but scalable, impactful, and environmentally restorative.

Benefits and Prize Distribution

The Wege Prize offers students an opportunity to gain real-world experience while competing for significant financial awards. The prize fund is distributed as follows:

  • First Place – $30,000 USD
  • Second Place – $20,000 USD
  • Third Place – $10,000 USD
  • Two Finalist Awards – $2,500 USD each

Beyond the cash awards, participants benefit from expert mentorship, access to global networks, and international recognition for their work.
