The Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition (QCEC) 2025 is officially open for submissions, inviting young writers from across the Commonwealth to participate in one of the world’s most prestigious essay competitions. This year’s theme, Our Commonwealth Journey, encourages entrants to explore the significance of journeys in various contexts—historical, geographical, and personal.

Exploring Journeys in the Commonwealth

Journeys have long been a defining element of human experience, shaping cultures, histories, and individual growth. The Commonwealth, established in 1949, has undergone numerous transformations to become the global community it is today, encompassing 56 member countries, covering five continents, and representing a diverse population of 2.7 billion people. This milestone marks an opportunity to reflect on past journeys, ongoing developments, and the potential paths ahead.

The QCEC 2025 invites participants to share their perspectives on the journeys that have defined the Commonwealth, the journeys it may take in the future, and their own personal journeys that connect with its broader themes.

Competition Categories & Topics

The competition is divided into two age-based categories, each offering unique writing prompts to inspire creativity and critical thinking.

Senior Category (Ages 14-18)

Born between May 23, 2006, and May 23, 2011.

• Envision a Commonwealth where everyone has equal access to education, a core value outlined in the Commonwealth Charter. Describe how this transformation would impact lives and societies.
• Retell a famous legend or folklore from your own or another Commonwealth country, bringing a fresh and surprising perspective.
• Inspired by Queen Camilla’s quote, “Human beings have always needed the connection of literature – its wisdom as well as its sheer escapism,” write about a book that took you on a profound journey and how it influenced you.
• Narrate the life journey of a plant growing in the heart of your community, exploring its experiences and interactions with its surroundings.

Junior Category (Under 14 Years Old)

Born on or after May 23, 2011.

• Reflecting on King Charles’s statement, “Together, we represent a third of humanity, with all the splendidly diverse complexity that this entails,” write about an interesting fact you learned about a different Commonwealth country.
• Describe a sea voyage from one Commonwealth country to a small island nation. What do you see, and who do you meet along the way?
• Imagine finding a secret door that transports you into your favorite book. What unfolds in this magical journey?
• Visualize an animal Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). Which animals attend, and what pressing issues do they discuss?
