The University of Bonn has officially opened applications for the Bonn International Fellowships 2025, offering an exceptional opportunity for globally renowned researchers to undertake short-term academic visits to Germany. Program Overview

The Bonn International Fellowships aim to attract top-tier researchers from institutions outside Germany. Fellows will spend up to 12 days in Bonn, actively engaging in academic collaboration, scholarly exchange, and institutional networking.

During their stay, fellows are expected to participate in lectures, seminars, and workshops, while also building meaningful partnerships with faculty members at the University of Bonn.

Fellowship Timeline

  • Call Opens: May 29, 2025
  • Application Deadline: September 22, 2025 (5:00 PM CET)
  • Notification of Results: Early December 2025
  • Eligible Visit Period: January 1 – December 31, 2026
  • Maximum Duration of Stay: 12 days

Eligibility Criteria

This fellowship opportunity is exclusively open to international researchers invited by a host from the University of Bonn. Therefore, only faculty or researchers employed at the University can submit an application on behalf of their invited fellow.

Invited fellows must be senior or mid-career researchers with an outstanding academic record and international recognition in their fields. There are no disciplinary restrictions, as long as the research aligns with the strategic interests of the University of Bonn and demonstrates strong potential for long-term collaboration.

Funding Coverage

The Bonn International Fellowships provide full funding to cover:

  • Travel expenses
  • Accommodation costs
  • Daily allowances

The financial package is designed to ensure a smooth, productive, and comfortable visit for fellows. However, the program does not cover salaries, research material costs, or support for extended stays.

Selection Criteria

Applications are assessed based on:

  • The academic distinction of the invited fellow, including publication history and global impact.
  • The feasibility and clarity of the proposed visit’s goals and planned activities.
  • Potential for future collaboration between the fellow and the University of Bonn.
  • Alignment with the University’s internationalization strategy and commitment to interdisciplinary research.

How to Apply

Only University of Bonn staff members can submit applications. A complete application package must include:

  1. Invitation letter from the host at the University of Bonn outlining the purpose and expected outcomes of the visit.
  2. Comprehensive CV of the invited fellow, including a full list of publications.
  3. Project description (maximum 3 pages) detailing the planned collaboration and academic relevance.
  4. Schedule of activities including academic events, lectures, and meetings.
  5. Estimated budget for the visit.

All materials must be submitted via the official online application portal before the deadline. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.
