Apply Now: Restoration Returns Grants Program – Empowering Community-Led Ecosystem Solutions

Admin, July 28, 2025July 28, 2025

Application Deadline: September 15, 2025

The Restoration Returns Grants Program is now open for applications, offering funding of up to $17,000 per project to support grassroots, community-driven restoration efforts. This opportunity is designed to help civil society groups, Indigenous organizations, and community-led projects across the globe implement impactful ecosystem restoration strategies.

 About the Grant

Launched under the umbrella of the G20 Global Land Initiative, the Restoration Returns Grants Program is part of a bold global mission:

  • Restore 1 billion hectares of degraded land by 2030
  • Reduce land degradation by 50% by 2040

This initiative prioritizes local communities as stewards of their environment and supports practical solutions to land restoration with high returns for both people and nature.

 What Is Ecosystem Restoration?

Restoration in this context refers to improving land productivity, land cover, and natural balance. Eligible restoration activities include but are not limited to:

  • Reforestation and afforestation
  • Agroforestry and sustainable farming practices
  • Soil quality enhancement and erosion control
  • Peatland rewetting and protection
  • Mangrove and wetland restoration
  • Waste and water management
  • Biodiversity conservation and pollution prevention

By supporting community action on these fronts, the program helps tackle climate change, enhance biodiversity, improve food and water security, and empower marginalized communities.

What’s New in 2025?

This year, the program has increased its grant award to USD 17,000 per project, reflecting the rising demand for grassroots restoration work and the creativity seen in previous submissions.

Funds may be used for a variety of purposes, such as:

  • Expanding the scale of restoration work
  • Introducing innovative or indigenous techniques
  • Purchasing tools and technologies
  • Offering technical training and workshops
  • Conducting community education and outreach
  • Documenting and sharing restoration outcomes

Projects can combine these activities or focus on one area, depending on the needs of the community and the goals of the proposal.

Who Can Apply?

The Restoration Returns Grants Program is open to organizations worldwide, not just those in G20 nations. However, there is a special focus on:

  • Civil society groups
  • Indigenous Peoples’ organizations
  • Grassroots initiatives from developing and least developed countries

Both new proposals and ongoing restoration efforts are eligible. That said, preference will be given to existing projects that have demonstrated measurable impact or promise and can be scaled up effectively.

To be eligible, applying organizations must:

  • Have a minimum annual operating budget of USD 25,000
  • Demonstrate that the funds will support the expansion or scaling of a project, not serve as stand-alone support
  • Be willing to submit progress updates if applying for multi-year funding

Application Deadline

All applications must be submitted by 15 September 2025.

This is a time-sensitive opportunity for communities and organizations working on land restoration to access flexible, catalytic funding to scale their work and contribute to global environmental goals.

Why This Grant Matters

The Restoration Returns Grants Program is more than a funding opportunity—it is an investment in the future of local leadership in global restoration. By centering communities and Indigenous knowledge systems, the program ensures that restoration efforts are not only effective but also sustainable and culturally appropriate.
