Admin, December 26, 2025December 26, 2025

Application Deadline: February 25, 2026

Applications are now open for the New Roots Institute Fellowship 2026, a transformative virtual leadership program empowering high school, college, and graduate students to create real change in food systems, sustainability, and advocacy.

The New Roots Institute Fellowship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience, mentorship, and leadership training from leading experts in advocacy and policy. Participants will build the skills and confidence to lead campaigns, influence conversations around sustainability, and drive meaningful impact in their communities and beyond.

Successful fellows receive $2,500 in financial support, professional coaching, and lifetime access to a thriving community of over 600 changemakers who are already driving progress across campuses and organizations worldwide.

 About the Fellowship

The New Roots Institute Fellowship equips young leaders with the knowledge, resources, and networks needed to challenge industrial animal agriculture and build sustainable food systems. This selective program combines academic learning with real-world advocacy, preparing students to lead initiatives that promote justice, environmental stewardship, and health.

 Program Overview

The fellowship runs in two core phases designed to help participants learn, apply, and lead effectively.

Phase One: Leadership Academy (June 30 – August 6, 2026)

The journey begins with the Leadership Academy, a six-week virtual summer program that immerses fellows in the realities of industrial food systems and the strategies to transform them.

Schedule Highlights:

  • Live sessions: Tuesday–Thursday, 9:00 am–12:30 pm PT (12:00–4:30 pm ET)
  • Small-group discussions: Once daily, scheduled for collaboration and peer learning
  • Weekly time commitment: Approximately 18–20 hours

Through workshops, discussions, and skill-building activities, fellows gain valuable insights into leadership, advocacy, storytelling, and community organizing.

Phase Two: Academic Year Fellowship (September 23, 2026 – April 9, 2027)

The second phase focuses on practical action and campaign leadership. Fellows design and execute advocacy projects that promote sustainability and ethical food practices in their schools or communities.

Commitment: Around 6 hours per week, including live sessions, project work, and collaboration.

Each participant receives ongoing mentorship and customized support, ensuring the program fits seamlessly into their academic schedules.

 Benefits of Joining

Fellows gain more than just training—they join a global community of leaders united by purpose and impact.

  • $2,500 in financial support for full participation across both phases
  • Expert mentorship from professionals in leadership, policy, and advocacy
  • Career-building experience through real-world campaign work
