About the Fellowship The New Roots Institute Fellowship equips young leaders with the knowledge, resources, and networks needed to challenge industrial animal agriculture and build sustainable food systems. This selective program combines academic learning with real-world advocacy, preparing students to lead initiatives that promote justice, environmental stewardship, and health. Program Overview The fellowship runs in two core phases designed to help participants learn, apply, and lead effectively. Phase One: Leadership Academy (June 30 – August 6, 2026) The journey begins with the Leadership Academy, a six-week virtual summer program that immerses fellows in the realities of industrial food systems and the strategies to transform them. Schedule Highlights: Live sessions: Tuesday–Thursday, 9:00 am–12:30 pm PT (12:00–4:30 pm ET) Small-group discussions: Once daily, scheduled for collaboration and peer learning Weekly time commitment: Approximately 18–20 hours Through workshops, discussions, and skill-building activities, fellows gain valuable insights into leadership, advocacy, storytelling, and community organizing. Phase Two: Academic Year Fellowship (September 23, 2026 – April 9, 2027) The second phase focuses on practical action and campaign leadership. Fellows design and execute advocacy projects that promote sustainability and ethical food practices in their schools or communities. Commitment: Around 6 hours per week, including live sessions, project work, and collaboration. Each participant receives ongoing mentorship and customized support, ensuring the program fits seamlessly into their academic schedules.
