This impactful initiative provides strategic support to agri-food businesses based in Ireland and 19 eligible African countries. The program is designed to boost sustainable development in Africa’s agri-food system while strengthening trade and knowledge exchange between Africa and Ireland. AADP funding supports both Feasibility Studies and Full Commercial Projects—each designed to empower enterprises that aim to make a tangible difference in Africa’s agricultural value chains. Feasibility Study Grant This grant supports preliminary exploration into business viability. Irish private sector organizations or eligible African agri-food businesses can apply individually or collaboratively. Projects must aim to identify commercial concepts and market opportunities that align with sustainable food system transformation in Africa. Key highlights: Open to solo and joint proposals Supports early-stage research, market assessments, and business planning Encourages innovation aligned with development goals Full Commercial Project Grant This grant focuses on scaling up viable, revenue-generating ventures through partnerships between Irish and African agri-food businesses. Applicants must submit joint proposals that offer innovative, scalable solutions contributing to Africa’s food system transformation. Key highlights: Only available to Irish-African joint ventures Must propose commercially viable, impactful solutions Encourages knowledge transfer and mutual trade between regions Who Can Apply? Eligible applicants must be registered agri-food businesses with at least 24 months of operational experience. The program welcomes organizations of all sizes and legal structures, including: Micro-enterprises and SMEs Sole proprietors and partnerships Social enterprises and cooperatives Commercial farming networks and companies Eligible African Countries Businesses from the following countries may apply:Botswana, Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Proposal Requirements To be considered for funding, all applications must: Be commercial in scope and implemented in one or more eligible African countries Demonstrate alignment with Ireland’s international development policy A Better World and the UN Sustainable Development Goals Clearly explain the need for public funding to unlock future financing opportunities Prove organizational capability, including financial oversight and governance structures Illustrate how the project will foster knowledge exchange and trade between Africa and Ireland Supporting Documentation Applications must include: An Irish Tax Clearance Certificate, even for African applicants (can be obtained from Irish Revenue Commissioners) A detailed budget breakdown, covering expenses, funding sources, activities, and equipment A project implementation plan with a timeline of key activities A collaboration plan outlining how project partners will work together throughout the project lifecycle Note: Requirements differ slightly between Feasibility and Full Commercial Projects. What AADP Grants Do Not Cover AADP grants cannot be used for the following: Activities involving weapons, tobacco, alcohol, gambling, or fossil fuels Projects contributing to deforestation or forest degradation Operations that violate international standards on human rights, labor laws, or environmental practices Projects lacking animal welfare compliance or local regulatory alignment Any capital expenditure in Ireland (unless specifically pre-approved) Important Notes for Applicants Applicants seeking Full Commercial Project grants must independently identify their African-Irish business partner. The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs, Department of Agriculture, and AADP do not facilitate matchmaking. Successful grantees are encouraged to collaborate with NGOs where applicable—particularly in areas such as training, community engagement, or extension services.
