Applications are now open for the Mandela Washington Fellowship 2027!
If you are a young African leader between 25 and 35 with a track record of making impact in your community, this is your chance to spend six weeks in the United States on a fully funded leadership program.
The Mandela Washington Fellowship is the flagship program of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), launched by the US Government in 2014. For over a decade, it has been the gold standard for youth leadership development in Africa.
Why does this matter now? Africa is home to the youngest population in the world, yet many young leaders lack access to global networks, executive training, and funding. This fellowship was created to close that gap. It doesn’t just train you – it connects you to 7,800+ alumni and US leaders who can help you scale your impact.

About the Program

The Mandela Washington Fellowship will bring approximately 700 young leaders from Sub-Saharan Africa to the United States in June 2027.
Selected Fellows will be placed in one of three leadership tracks based on their work:

• Business and Entrepreneurship
• Civic Engagement
• Public Management

You will participate in a six-week Leadership Institute at a top American college or university. The institutes are executive-style – meaning you will learn from professors, but also from mayors, CEOs, NGO leaders, and innovators who are actually doing the work.

Beyond the classroom, the program includes networking events, city tours, community service, and cultural exchange. After the academic component, all Fellows will converge in Washington, D.C. for a high-level Summit where you will meet with US leaders and network with each other.

The mission is simple: to empower the next generation of African leaders to lead in their sectors and build lasting partnerships with Americans.

Please note: Fellows are not allowed to bring dependents, including spouses and children.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Mandela Washington Fellowship 2027, you must meet all of the following:

• Be between 25 and 35 years old on or before the application deadline of October 13, 2026. Exceptional applicants aged 21-24 will also be considered.
• Be a citizen of one of the eligible Sub-Saharan African countries: Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cabo Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Cote d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Gabon, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia, or Zimbabwe.
• Be a resident of one of the above countries and will be living there permanently as of February 1, 2027 and at the start of the Fellowship in June 2027.
• Be proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English.
• Be eligible to receive a United States J-1 visa.
• Not be a US citizen or permanent resident.
• Not be an employee or immediate family member of an employee of the US Government or IREX.
• Not be an alumnus or prior participant of the Mandela Washington Fellowship.

Application Timeline

• September 22, 2026: Application Opens
• October 13, 2026: Application Deadline – 11:59 PM UTC
• November 2026 – January 2027: Semi-finalists interviewed by local US embassies and consulates. You must bring a government-issued photo ID or international passport.
• February/March 2027: Final status notification
• March – May 2027: Visa processing and mandatory pre-departure orientations
• June 2027: Fellowship begins in the United States

Tips for a Strong Application / Why You Should Apply

Thousands apply, only 550 are selected. Here is how to stand out:

1. Show Impact, Not Just Titles: Don’t just say “I am CEO of…”. Tell us how many youths you trained, how much revenue you grew, how many people you reached. Use numbers.
2. Be Specific About Partnerships: The selection committee looks for your interest in building US-Africa partnerships. Name the kind of American organization you want to work with and why. This shows you have done your research.
3. Have a Clear “Return Plan”: The Fellowship wants leaders who will return home. What will you do with the knowledge in your community in Etinan, Lagos, Nairobi, or Accra? Make it tangible.
