Admin, March 12, 2025March 12, 2025

Application Deadline: March 31, 2025

The Atlantic Fellows for Racial Equity (AFRE) Fellowship Programme is now accepting applications for its 2025 cohort. This prestigious fellowship provides a transformative opportunity for individuals committed to racial justice to deepen their leadership, explore the global complexities of race, and unlock their creativity for social change.

About the AFRE Fellowship Programme

The AFRE Fellowship brings together changemakers from across the Black diaspora and beyond, creating a space where they can build relationships, engage in deep reflection, and experiment with innovative ideas to combat systemic racism. The fellowship acknowledges the challenges faced by racial justice leaders—burnout, isolation, and the constant pressure of urgent activism—and offers them a space to refuel, strategize, and imagine new possibilities.

Fellowship Benefits and Funding

Selected fellows will receive substantial support to participate in the programme, including:

  • Financial Assistance: Fellows may access up to $10,000 USD to support leadership development and cover incidental costs.
  • Travel and Accommodation: The programme covers round-trip travel, accommodation, meals, and ground transportation for all in-person convenings.
  • Family Care Support: Funding is available for fellows who support children, dependents, or family members.
  • Leadership Coaching: Up to six and a half hours of personalized leadership coaching sessions.

Who Should Apply?

The AFRE Fellowship seeks individuals who are actively engaged in racial equity work and demonstrate a strong commitment to social change. Ideal candidates should meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • A minimum of five years of professional experience in racial equity or a related field.
  • Ability to fully commit to all programming, including:
    • A two-week residency in South Africa
    • A weeklong in-person convening (location to be determined)
  • Must reside in Africa, the Americas, the Caribbean, Europe, or the SWANA region during the virtual programming periods (September 2025, October 2025, and February 2026).
  • Should not be participating in another fellowship programme during the programme dates.
  • Must be highly proficient in spoken and written English.

Notably, there are no academic qualifications required, making the fellowship accessible to a diverse range of experienced leaders.

Ideal Candidate Profile

AFRE seeks applicants who:

  • Have a track record of improving the quality of Black life in their local or regional contexts.
  • Are eager to grow, learn, and challenge themselves.
  • Want to expand their racial equity work on a global scale.
  • Are passionate about exploring the vastness of Black identity and perspectives worldwide.

The programme values individuals who are:

  • Open-minded – Willing to learn and engage with diverse perspectives.
  • Self-aware – Conscious of their identity and the world around them.
  • Intentional – Thoughtful and strategic in their leadership.
  • Aspiring – Able to envision possibilities beyond the present.
