Admin, October 31, 2025November 1, 2025

Application Deadline: December 22, 2025

The Systemic Impact Fellowship is a highly competitive and fully funded program hosted by the Nigerian Center’s Policy & Advocacy Department in Washington, DC. Designed for exceptional young professionals from Nigeria, this prestigious fellowship provides a unique platform to learn how systemic change is achieved through policy advocacy, legislative processes, and large-scale social impact initiatives.

Running for 6 to 12 months, the program nurtures the next generation of impact-driven leaders by equipping them with the skills, experience, and global exposure needed to influence positive change both in the United States and back home in Nigeria.

Driving Systemic Change Through Policy and Advocacy

At the heart of the fellowship lies a mission to deepen understanding of U.S. immigration policy and the broader dynamics of U.S.–Nigeria relations. Fellows work closely with the Nigerian Center to support initiatives that strengthen bilateral cooperation, promote inclusion, and elevate the voices of African immigrants within the policy landscape.

Key policy focus areas include:

  • Strengthening U.S.–Nigeria relations through strategic policy engagement.
  • Elevating African immigrant communities as key contributors to U.S. policy priorities.
  • Expanding financial inclusion and economic empowerment for African immigrants.

Through hands-on participation, fellows contribute directly to the Nigerian Center’s advocacy and research agenda, helping shape policies that drive long-term systemic impact.

Program Overview

The fellowship provides a comprehensive mix of experiential learning, research, and practical engagement. Participants gain invaluable exposure through:

  • Federal and State Policy Research: Conducting in-depth studies on immigration justice and U.S.–Nigeria relations while engaging directly with policymakers on Capitol Hill.
  • Policy Advocacy: Supporting advocacy efforts such as DC Council testimonies, meetings with elected officials, and coalition-building activities.
  • Media and Narrative Campaigns: Crafting narratives that highlight Nigerian American contributions to the United States’ cultural and economic growth.
  • Community Education: Leading community outreach initiatives, including “Know Your Rights” workshops and immigration support programs.
  • Legislative Observations: Understanding how advocacy organizations influence U.S. legislation and policy outcomes.

Upon completing the fellowship, participants return to Nigeria, where they receive post-fellowship support to apply their skills in public or private institutions. This ensures that the knowledge gained abroad contributes to sustainable development and systemic change within Nigeria.
