Apply Now: Ban Ki-moon Foundation Global Citizen Scholarship Program 2026 (Fully Funded Virtual Leadership & SDG Changemaker Program)

Admin, February 24, 2026February 24, 2026

Application Deadline: March 4, 2026

Applications are now open for the Global Citizen Scholarship Program 2026, a unique and fully virtual opportunity designed to empower the next generation of changemakers. If you are passionate about driving sustainable development and transforming your community, this program could be a transformative stepping stone in your leadership journey.

In a world grappling with global challenges — from climate change to inequality and health crises — young leaders are increasingly taking the lead in crafting solutions that are both innovative and locally grounded. The Global Citizen Scholarship (GC Scholarship) aims to amplify that potential by equipping dedicated young professionals with the tools, knowledge, and networks they need to turn ideas into impact.

This scholarship is more than a training program: it’s a platform for growth, collaboration, and action aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — the blueprint for a better and more equitable world by 2030.

Whether you are based in Nigeria, Ethiopia, India, Nepal, Egypt, or across the eligible regions of Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, or Southeast Asia, this opportunity offers an inclusive space to expand your horizons.

About the Global Citizen Scholarship Program

The Global Citizen Scholarship Program is an initiative facilitated by the Ban Ki-moon Foundation, named after the former UN Secretary-General and champion of multilateralism and sustainable development. The program enters its ninth cycle in 2026, reflecting almost a decade of investment in young leaders dedicated to creating meaningful change.

The scholarship seeks young global citizens — individuals whose work, values, and aspirations align with advancing one or more of the 17 SDGs in their communities. It is designed to be fully virtual, enabling participation without the barriers of travel or relocation, and creating a richly diverse cohort united by purpose.

Over the course of 8–9 months, participants engage in a structured combination of:

  • Expert-led workshops and trainings focused on sustainable development, entrepreneurship, and project implementation.
  • Peer-to-peer mentoring — enabling deep collaboration and shared learning among changemakers.
  • A virtual summer school hosted in partnership with Management Center Innsbruck (MCI) University, offering intensive learning modules and applied skill building.
  • Project design and execution support, with financial seed funding to bring ideas to fruition.

This blend of learning, mentorship, and practical action differentiates the GC Scholarship from many conventional leadership or fellowship programs — it emphasizes doing, not just learning.

Why the Global Citizen Scholarship Matters

In today’s interconnected world, the biggest solutions often come from those closest to the problems they seek to solve. The GC Scholarship is significant because it:

  1. Prioritizes local solutions with global frameworks. The SDGs may be global, but change happens locally — from Kampala to Karachi — and this program harnesses that synergy.
  2. Supports early-stage project implementation. Many leadership initiatives offer training but stop short of funding actual project execution. This scholarship bridges that gap with seed funding and concrete support.
  3. Amplifies voices from historically underrepresented regions. With a focus on countries across Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, and Southeast Asia, it builds a globally diverse and inclusive cohort.
  4. Builds practical capacity. Beyond theory, participants gain real tools and networks that can sustain their work far beyond the program cycle.

For emerging leaders and innovators, this opportunity offers both credibility and momentum — essential ingredients for long-term impact.

Benefits ― What Selected Participants Receive

Selected Global Citizen Scholars will enjoy a comprehensive package of support, including:

  • ✅ Full cost coverage of the 2-week summer school training with Management Center Innsbruck University.
  • ✅ Professional workshops and expert sessions on SDGs, sustainable development, and entrepreneurship.
  • ✅ Peer-to-peer mentoring to deepen collaboration and learning across contexts.
  • ✅ Seed funding of €500 to kick-start the implementation of your changemaker project (dependent on successful project proposal submission).
  • ✅ Certificate of Achievement co-signed by H.E. Ban Ki-moon and H.E. Dr. Heinz Fischer, affirming your commitment and completion of the program.
  • ✅ Access to a global network of changemakers, trainers, and professionals.

This combination of financial support, professional development, and network access positions participants not just for short-term success but for long-term leadership influence.

Tips for a Strong Application

The competition for the Global Citizen Scholarship is likely to be strong — with only 16 changemakers selected from a wide geographic pool. Here’s how to make your application stand out:

1. Craft a Purpose-Driven Story

The motivational statement is your narrative. Connect your personal journey with your chosen SDG, and show how your project idea is rooted in lived experience or identified community need.

2. Be Clear and Concise

Your project outline should be specific about who, what, where, how, and why. Ambiguous proposals are harder to evaluate.

3. Show Impact, Not Just Intent

Where possible, include metrics, timelines, and partnerships you intend to leverage. Funders and selectors appreciate practical feasibility.

4. Use Your Video Wisely

A short video gives you an edge. Be confident, clear, and authentic — convey your passion and your project’s potential impact in under 60 seconds.

5. Review & Refine

Proofread for clarity and grammar. Ask a mentor, peer, or professional network contact to review your draft before submission.

Conclusion

The Global Citizen Scholarship Program 2026 is a remarkable platform for young leaders across Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, and Southeast Asia to enhance their leadership capacities, drive SDG-aligned change, and connect with an inspiring global community.

If you are ready to bring your ideas to life and accelerate your impact, don’t wait until the last minute — start your application today. Seize this opportunity to grow, learn, and lead with purpose.
