Apply Now: Accelerating Innovation in Vaginal Formulations for Women’s Health Admin, November 24, 2025November 24, 2025 Application Deadline:December 16, 2025 The Science for Africa Foundation (SFA) — in partnership with Grand Challenges Africa and global research partners — has announced a new funding call titled “Accelerating Innovation in Vaginal Formulations in Support of Women’s Health.” This initiative seeks to catalyze groundbreaking research and development focused on vaginal drug delivery systems that enhance women’s health, autonomy, and well-being. Applications are open until Tuesday, December 16, 2025 Despite major advances in global health, the local delivery of drugs into the vagina remains underexplored and underutilized. This approach offers several advantages, including discreet administration, targeted local efficacy, reduced side effects, and the potential for dosage efficiency. However, the field faces key challenges — from a lack of mechanistic biological data to misconceptions around user acceptance and cultural perceptions. Through this call, SFA and its partners aim to support innovative technologies and approaches that make vaginal formulations both scientifically effective and user-centered, advancing reproductive health research across Africa and beyond. What the Challenge Seeks to Address The Accelerating Innovation in Vaginal Formulations RFP invites researchers and innovators to propose solutions that improve drug delivery in the vaginal environment while supporting overall vaginal health. The ultimate goal is to design products that women not only tolerate — but want to use. Applicants are encouraged to explore innovations that: Enhance vaginal health and promote optimal drug absorption. Leverage the vaginal microenvironment for effective drug delivery. Improve acceptability and user experience. Offer ancillary benefits that appeal to women, such as odor control or sexual enhancement. By focusing on these areas, the challenge aims to generate transformative products and insights that can redefine how vaginal health solutions are designed, developed, and adopted globally. Core Research Objectives The call invites proposals that address one or both of the following objectives: 1. Define the Characteristics of an Ideal Vaginal Product Researchers are invited to conduct qualitative studies that identify the features women desire in vaginally administered products — including benefits beyond therapeutic effects. Projects may explore women’s perspectives across cultures and demographics to uncover what makes a product desirable and practical for real-world use. 2. Leverage Biology for Vaginally Administered Products Applicants can propose innovative formulations and delivery systems that make use of the vaginal microenvironment. Proposals may explore how the vaginal microbiome, host cells, or mucus interact with drugs — with a focus on safety, scalability, and cost-effectiveness. Who Can Apply This opportunity is open to a diverse range of organizations, including: Research institutes and universities Nonprofit and for-profit organizations International organizations Government agencies Applicants must apply through recognized legal entities. Collaborations are strongly encouraged — particularly women-led teams and researchers based in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Projects must align with Grand Challenges Africa’s commitment to equitable research partnerships, capacity strengthening, and inclusive science. Funding Details Successful applicants will receive grants ranging from $100,000 to $200,000 for projects lasting up to 24 months. Exploratory projects with shorter durations and higher innovation potential will receive priority. Budgets should align with the proposed scope of work, with indirect costs capped at 10–15% of the total award. Key Considerations for Applicants Proposals should: Focus on vaginal delivery methods suitable for LMIC contexts. Incorporate end-user perspectives into the research design. Demonstrate feasibility and scientific rigor. Generate actionable biological or user-centered data. Promote diversity, inclusion, and equitable collaboration. Projects will not be funded if they focus on contraceptive or STI treatments, lack a translational pathway, or depend solely on basic exploratory science or anecdotal data. Why This Matters Women’s health innovations have long been underfunded and under-prioritized — especially in LMICs where access to reproductive healthcare remains limited. By investing in vaginal formulation research, the Science for Africa Foundation and Grand Challenges Africa are reshaping the future of women’s health by: Encouraging user-centered design. Supporting African-led innovation. Promoting equitable research collaborations. Building scientific capacity across the continent. This call represents a crucial opportunity for African scientists, innovators, and institutions to contribute to a future where women’s health products are safe, accessible, and empowering.
