Applications Open for wAtt-boost Youth-Led Renewable Energy Startups in Africa Admin, May 30, 2025May 30, 2025 Application Deadline: June 10, 2025 The Enel Foundation, in collaboration with RES4Africa Foundation and Strathmore University, has officially launched the first edition of the wAtt-boost Youth Powered Start-Up in Africa. This initiative is designed to empower young African entrepreneurs and startups innovating in the renewable energy space. Focused on accelerating sustainable development across the continent, the program offers both pre-acceleration and acceleration tracks tailored to startups at various growth stages. Selected participants will receive comprehensive training, mentorship, visibility, and access to funding opportunities. Program Overview The wAtt-boost initiative is strategically designed to foster innovation and enterprise development in Africa’s renewable energy ecosystem. Through a dual-track format, the program provides targeted support for both budding entrepreneurs and established startups. Pre-Accelerator ProgramThis track targets early-stage entrepreneurs and startups. Participants will focus on refining their business ideas, creating a Minimum Viable Product (MVP), and exploring market entry strategies. Accelerator ProgramThis track is tailored for more advanced startups seeking to scale. Participants will work on building robust teams, developing bankable products, strengthening business models, and expanding their networks and customer base. Thematic Focus Areas wAtt-boost supports startups addressing a range of challenges in the energy and sustainability sectors. Key thematic areas include: Artificial Intelligence (AI): Smart grid management, AI-driven predictive maintenance, and optimization of renewable energy systems. Grids and Infrastructure: Solutions for efficient, resilient energy grids and infrastructure to enhance energy access in underserved communities. Climate Adaptation and Mitigation: Technologies that support climate resilience, carbon capture, and emissions reduction. Clean Cooking: Innovations promoting affordable, sustainable alternatives to biomass for cooking, such as efficient cookstoves. Electric Mobility: Development of EV solutions, infrastructure for charging, and sustainable transport models suited for African markets. Agrivoltaics: Integration of agriculture and solar power to boost land efficiency, improve food security, and advance clean energy access. Training Modules Selected participants will undergo two comprehensive training modules: NewGen Renewable Energy Accelerator – Delivered by IRENA with support from Enel Foundation between June and July 2025. RES4Africa Custom Training – A targeted module focusing on Africa’s evolving electricity markets and related business dynamics. All sessions will be conducted in English and cover technical and business development components essential for startup success. Funding and Awards Participants who successfully complete the program will be eligible to compete for two final awards totaling €20,000 (€10,000 for each winner). These awards will support startups in scaling their solutions and increasing impact in the renewable energy sector. What’s Covered? Participants will benefit from a holistic support package, including: Business and technical training One-on-one mentoring and coaching Networking and visibility opportunities Access to funding and investment readiness support Eligibility Criteria To be considered, applicants must meet the following criteria: Aged between 18 and 35 years Solution must target the African market Must be African citizens or have a startup registered in Africa Startup must be registered for at least one year and operate within the renewable energy/electrification sector Proficiency in English (native, CAE certified, or English-taught degree) Selection Process Fourteen participants will be selected based on: Relevance and impact of the proposed solution Innovation and uniqueness Financial and operational feasibility Scalability and market potential Strength and readiness of the business case From this cohort, six startups (three from each track) will be shortlisted to pitch at the semifinals. The top two winners will be selected during a final in-person pitch session in Nairobi.
