Designed for future researchers, economists, and policymakers, GAIN equips participants with the skills, resources, and mentorship needed to excel in competitive Master’s and PhD programs.

The GAIN Program is a flagship initiative that bridges the gap between aspiring African scholars and world-class graduate education opportunities. It offers a structured, multi-phase learning experience that focuses on enhancing academic readiness, improving research competence, and building strong graduate applications.

Through interactive webinars, mentoring, and GRE preparation, participants gain exposure to the realities of academic and policy research careers while learning from globally recognized economists. The ultimate goal is to increase African representation in international graduate schools and research institutions.

Program Structure and Phases

1. Webinar Series (First Stage)

All accepted participants begin with a biweekly online webinar series starting in January 2026. These interactive sessions cover:

• Crafting strong graduate school applications
• Writing impactful research proposals and personal statements
• Exploring career paths in academia, research, and policy institutions
• Identifying funding and fellowship opportunities

Participation in this stage is mandatory for anyone applying to the mentoring phase. The webinar requires a 3–5 hour weekly commitment beginning in January.

2. Mentoring Program (Second Stage)

After completing the webinar series, participants may apply for the intensive mentoring stage, which is competitive.

Selected participants will:

• Participate in a GRE bootcamp and sit for the exam
• Be evaluated on performance and dedication
• Receive personalized mentorship from senior economists
• Receive end-to-end guidance through the graduate school application process

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify, applicants must:

• Be in their final undergraduate year or hold a Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in economics or related fields
• Intend to pursue a PhD in economics or related disciplines, or a Master’s leading to a PhD
• Be ready and willing to study abroad
• Commit to active participation in all program activities, including the GAIN Webinar Series
