Applications are Open for the UNFCCC–UNU Early Career Climate Fellowship Programme 2025: Empowering Young Climate Leaders from Developing Countries

Admin, October 14, 2025October 14, 2025

Application Deadline: 31 October 2025

The UNFCCC–UNU Early Career Climate Fellowship Programme 2025 is an exceptional opportunity for young professionals from developing countries to launch their careers at the intersection of international climate policy and scientific research.

Jointly hosted by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS/VIE), the fellowship empowers emerging leaders to contribute to global climate action while developing the skills and experience needed to drive change in their home countries.

What the Fellowship Offers

The fellowship runs for 12 months to 2 years and allows participants to work within various divisions of UNU-EHS and UNFCCC. Fellows collaborate on climate-related projects, policy analysis, and research that shape the global sustainability agenda.

This program is designed to build the next generation of climate leaders who can effectively link scientific knowledge with practical policy solutions. Upon completion, fellows are encouraged to apply their gained insights and skills in their home countries or within international organizations committed to advancing climate resilience.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the UNFCCC–UNU Early Career Climate Fellowship, applicants must:

  • Originate from a developing country and be 32 years or younger at the time of application.
  • Hold a master’s or doctoral degree (or equivalent) with top academic performance in fields relevant to the work of UNU-EHS or UNFCCC.
  • Demonstrate a strong interest in international climate policy, research, and sustainability development.
  • Exhibit key competencies aligned with the UN Values and Behaviours Framework, including integrity, inclusion, humility, and humanity.
  • Possess strong written and spoken English skills. Knowledge of another UN official language is an added advantage.

Applicants who hold dual nationality must have lived for at least six years in one of the least developed countries corresponding to their citizenship to be eligible.

Who Should Apply

The fellowship is open to academically outstanding young graduates who are passionate about climate action and sustainable development. Applicants do not need prior international work experience, making this an ideal opportunity for recent graduates and early-career professionals.

Women and youth from least developed countries (LDCs) are particularly encouraged to apply. Candidates from the Global South are also highly encouraged, as the program prioritizes building capacity and expertise in regions most affected by climate change.

Preferred Skills and Experience

While no professional experience is required, applicants with up to two years of relevant work experience—including internships, research assistantships, or volunteer work—will have an advantage. Active engagement in climate-related extracurricular activities, community projects, or environmental advocacy is also valued.

Application Process

Applications are only accepted during the official open call. A complete application package must include:

  • A one-page cover letter highlighting your motivation and suitability.
  • An up-to-date CV (maximum two pages).
  • A completed and signed UNU Personal History Form (P11).
  • Copies of academic transcripts and degree certificates, compiled into a single PDF document.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a competency-based interview conducted via Zoom or telephone. Successful applicants will receive a fellowship under the UNU Personnel Service Agreement (PSA).

The application deadline is 31 October 2025.

Why This Fellowship Matters

This program provides a rare opportunity to work directly with leading international climate institutions, contribute to evidence-based climate policy, and engage with experts across multiple disciplines. Fellows will emerge with a deeper understanding of global environmental governance, climate diplomacy, and the interconnections between research and policy action.

By equipping young leaders with the knowledge and tools to address climate challenges, the UNFCCC–UNU Fellowship strengthens global efforts toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and a more resilient planet.

How to Apply

Interested candidates should visit the official UNU website for more details and to submit their application. Ensure all required documents are complete before submission, as incomplete applications will not be reviewed.
