The International Press Institute (IPI) invites applications for the third edition of its Local News Accelerator Program 2025, a transformative initiative aimed at strengthening the financial and editorial sustainability of local news organizations around the world.

This intensive four-month accelerator is specifically designed for local publishers and newsrooms looking to:

• Enhance audience engagement
• Develop resilient business models
• Adapt to the ever-evolving digital news landscape
• Gain tailored support to drive sustainability and growth

Whether you’re launching a new initiative or pivoting your current model, the program offers strategic coaching, needs-based training, and access to a global network of innovators in local journalism.

What to Expect

Participants will benefit from:

A one-month comprehensive needs assessment conducted by IPI’s in-house experts to pinpoint your organization’s challenges and opportunities.

Hands-on training covering essential areas like:

• Audience research & engagement
• Journalism formats (audio, video, newsletters)
• Strategic planning
• Digital storytelling
• Business model innovation and revenue diversification
• Tailored one-on-one coaching, offering flexible, on-demand support to address unique newsroom needs.

Throughout the accelerator, you will also gain access to a vibrant global community of local news leaders, sharing ideas, feedback, and practical strategies.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for this opportunity, your organization must:

• Be a legally registered media entity based anywhere in the world.
• Primarily serve a local audience with content that meets community-specific information needs.
• Demonstrate a commitment to original, ethical journalism and press freedom.
• Have a minimum of two team members available to participate (4 hours/week each for four months).
• Present a clear understanding of your audience, supported by market or audience research.
• Be willing to embrace innovation, adopt new tools, and experiment with engagement methods.
• Submit a proposal outlining a specific need or problem to be addressed during the accelerator (this may evolve throughout the program).

Selection Process

• Applications must be completed in English and submitted via the Jotform platform before the deadline.
• Once submitted, applications cannot be edited.
• A selection jury made up of IPI-appointed experts will evaluate all submissions based on the outlined criteria.
• All applicants will receive a confirmation email upon submission.
