Applications are now open for the Global STEM Accelerators Program 2026

Admin, February 20, 2026February 20, 2026

Application Deadline: April 15, 2026

Are you a young woman passionate about science, technology, sustainability, and global change? Here’s your chance to join a prestigious, fully funded online program designed to empower girls from around the world to become future STEM leaders and social innovators.

The Global STEM Accelerators Program, an initiative by AFS Intercultural Programs, brings together talented young women to explore STEM, sustainability, and social impact in a truly global learning environment. This 12-week virtual program integrates science, technology, engineering, and mathematics with global competence skills, leadership development, and cultural exchange.

Applications are open until April 15, 2026 — and if selected, you’ll earn a prestigious Advanced Certificate on Global Competence for Social Impact from University of Pennsylvania Center for Social Impact Strategy (Penn CSIS) and AFS Intercultural Programs.

About the Global STEM Accelerators Program

The Global STEM Accelerators Program is more than just a course — it’s a global movement that cultivates the next generation of changemakers. The initiative targets girls aged 14 to 17 who are eager to drive positive transformation in their communities through innovation, collaboration, and sustainability.

Running from May 30 to August 30, 2026, the fully online program combines:

  • Weekly live sessions with international peers and expert facilitators
  • Interactive self-paced learning modules
  • Games, quizzes, and creative assignments designed to build leadership and problem-solving skills

The learning experience goes beyond the classroom. Participants explore the intersections of STEM, climate change, social innovation, and the energy transition — learning how to design practical, sustainable solutions to real-world issues.

Through guided mentorship and project-based collaboration, scholars develop a Social Impact Project, which they later present to a global audience, including faculty from the University of Pennsylvania.

By connecting young women from different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, the program not only promotes STEM literacy but also advances gender equality, sustainable development, and global competence — three pillars that align with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Why This Opportunity Matters

Globally, women remain underrepresented in science and technology fields. The Global STEM Accelerators Program addresses this gap by investing in early talent — giving girls the knowledge, confidence, and networks to lead in STEM-driven industries.

For African participants in particular, this opportunity bridges the global digital divide. Many talented young women across the continent face barriers such as limited access to quality STEM education and mentorship. AFS’s free, flexible online model ensures inclusion, enabling participants from developing regions to gain access to international mentors and high-quality learning tools without financial constraints.

Graduates of this program join an expanding global network of female STEM leaders who continue to collaborate on sustainability and innovation projects long after the course ends.

Program Benefits

Selected participants of the 2026 cohort will receive:

  • Full scholarship coverage for all program costs — no tuition or participation fees required.
  • An immersive 12-week STEM learning experience, combining live global sessions and self-paced learning.
  • Advanced Certificate on Global Competence for Social Impact, jointly awarded by AFS Intercultural Programs and the University of Pennsylvania CSIS.
  • Mentorship and guidance from global educators, facilitators, and STEM professionals.
  • Networking opportunities with like-minded young women from more than 60 countries.
  • Project-based learning, including the design and digital presentation of a social-impact project.
  • Access to a global alumni network for continued growth, leadership development, and exchange opportunities.

This program not only strengthens academic and technical skills but also enhances global leadership, cross-cultural collaboration, and innovation capacity — essential attributes for future changemakers.

Tips for a Strong Application

To make your application stand out:

  1. Tell Your Story: Share how your interest in STEM relates to real-world issues — especially those affecting your community.
  2. Demonstrate Curiosity: Highlight your willingness to learn, collaborate, and explore new cultures.
  3. Show Impact: Include examples of how you’ve used your skills or ideas to make a difference — big or small.
  4. Seek Recommendations Wisely: Ask teachers or mentors who can speak authentically about your potential and character.
  5. Apply Early: Rolling reviews mean that early applicants often have a higher chance of consideration.

Remember, this isn’t just about grades — it’s about your mindset, motivation, and ability to envision solutions for a better world.

Why You Should Apply

Participating in the Global STEM Accelerators Program opens doors to academic advancement, global exposure, and personal growth. Beyond learning STEM concepts, you’ll gain skills that define modern leaders — critical thinking, cross-cultural communication, empathy, and innovation.

For young African girls, this program can be a career-defining experience — a chance to collaborate with global peers, build confidence, and connect with mentors who are actively shaping the future of STEM education.

Don’t miss this opportunity to be part of a program that’s empowering a new generation of female scientists, engineers, and social innovators committed to a sustainable planet.
