About the Fellowship The Newton International Fellowship program is jointly administered by the British Academy and the Royal Society. It aims to support exceptional early-career researchers in developing an independent research career through international collaboration. The program fosters global networking, provides access to world-class expertise, and promotes innovative research initiatives. Objectives of the Fellowship The program is designed to: Attract promising international early-career researchers to conduct research in the UK. Support high-quality and innovative research projects. Provide career development opportunities through skill-building and training. Foster long-term collaborations through networking opportunities and an active alumni network. Who Can Apply? To be eligible for the Newton International Fellowship, applicants must: Hold a PhD or expect to obtain one before the funding starts. Have no more than seven years of full-time postdoctoral research experience (excluding career breaks). Be based outside the UK and not hold UK citizenship. Demonstrate competency in English (both written and oral). Conduct research in the natural sciences, including but not limited to biology, biomedical sciences, chemistry, engineering, mathematics, and physics. Applicants from the humanities and social sciences should apply through the British Academy. Work with a UK-based sponsor, who will mentor and support the applicant throughout the fellowship. Additionally, those requiring a visa can apply for a Global Talent Visa under the fast-track endorsement process. Funding and Benefits Successful applicants receive a grant of up to £280,000 over two years to cover: A basic salary (determined by the host institution) with associated costs. Research expenses to support the project. Relocation and visa costs for fellows and their dependents. Additional funding for disabled applicants to ensure full participation. Career development opportunities, including leadership training, science communication workshops, and public engagement activities. Furthermore, alumni may receive continued funding for networking and research collaborations post-fellowship. Specialized Funding and Inclusivity The Royal Society ensures diversity and inclusion by regularly updating its policies to provide equitable opportunities. It also offers additional fellowships through partnerships: The International Science Partnerships Fund (ISPF) supports additional Newton International Fellowships for Swiss applicants. The K C Wong Education Foundation funds additional fellowships for applicants from China (Royal Society K C Wong International Fellowships). These additional fellowships carry the same prestige and benefits as the Newton International Fellowship. Application and Assessment Process Applications must be submitted via Flexi-Grant, following these steps: Initial Screening: Eligibility checks are performed. Expert Review: Applications are evaluated by two specialized committee members. Panel Review: Shortlisted applications are discussed in a panel meeting for final recommendations. Final Decision: Applicants are notified by 31 August 2025.
