If you are an early-career researcher looking to gain international experience and establish yourself in the global research community, the Newton International Fellowship (NIF) presents an incredible opportunity. Designed for non-UK scientists at the early stages of their research careers, this prestigious fellowship enables talented individuals to conduct groundbreaking research in the United Kingdom.

About the Fellowship

The Newton International Fellowship program is jointly administered by the British Academy and the Royal Society. It aims to support exceptional early-career researchers in developing an independent research career through international collaboration. The program fosters global networking, provides access to world-class expertise, and promotes innovative research initiatives.

Objectives of the Fellowship

The program is designed to:

  • Attract promising international early-career researchers to conduct research in the UK.
  • Support high-quality and innovative research projects.
  • Provide career development opportunities through skill-building and training.
  • Foster long-term collaborations through networking opportunities and an active alumni network.

Who Can Apply?

To be eligible for the Newton International Fellowship, applicants must:

  • Demonstrate competency in English (both written and oral).
  • Conduct research in the natural sciences, including but not limited to biology, biomedical sciences, chemistry, engineering, mathematics, and physics. Applicants from the humanities and social sciences should apply through the British Academy.
  • Work with a UK-based sponsor, who will mentor and support the applicant throughout the fellowship.

Additionally, those requiring a visa can apply for a Global Talent Visa under the fast-track endorsement process.

Funding and Benefits

Successful applicants receive a grant of up to £280,000 over two years to cover:

  • A basic salary (determined by the host institution) with associated costs.
  • Research expenses to support the project.
  • Relocation and visa costs for fellows and their dependents.
  • Additional funding for disabled applicants to ensure full participation.
  • Career development opportunities, including leadership training, science communication workshops, and public engagement activities.

Furthermore, alumni may receive continued funding for networking and research collaborations post-fellowship.

Specialized Funding and Inclusivity

The Royal Society ensures diversity and inclusion by regularly updating its policies to provide equitable opportunities. It also offers additional fellowships through partnerships:

  • The K C Wong Education Foundation funds additional fellowships for applicants from China (Royal Society K C Wong International Fellowships).

These additional fellowships carry the same prestige and benefits as the Newton International Fellowship.
